This home office started with a small oak desk. A family heirloom, the owner wanted to use the desk, but it was too small to do the job by itself. Positioning the desk in the middle of the room served to both highlight the desk and give us room to build shelves, cabinets and additional desk top space behind the desk itself. The other goal in designing this space was to accommodate the owner's various collections - books, fishing art, guitars, shotguns, plants and travel mementos. Soft green paint was chosen for the walls to underscore the owner's outdoor interests. The built-in units were crackle finished to lend them a masculine roughness, and the cabinet doors were crafted of solid mahogany. As always, lighting was important to this design. Dimmable halogen accent lamps can be found in the wall units and highlighting the owner's collectables.

Cabinet doors are solid mahogany. Closet door was finished with a mahogany stain. Mahogany was chosen for its warm contrast with the oak in the floors and furniture. The built-ins were painted with a crackle finish. These storage boxes were painted to match. The room was designed to accommodate the owner's diverse collections, which include books, art, guitars, shotguns, plants and travel mementos.

Oak desk is a family heirloom that serves as a focal point for this design. Shelves and base cabinets wrap two walls of the room, and include a corner gun cabinet. Small, unobtrusive halogen spotlights were installed to highlight the owner's collections of fishing art and guitars.

Details are important - these cabinet knobs were chosen to compliment the owner's love for fly fishing, and add a subtle personal touch. The owner's love of plants is reflected in the colors and details of the room's design. This hanging plant shelf was built and painted to match the room.

Plenty of shelves hold the owner's book's and mementos.
