This family room remodeling project was a real challenge. The room has an awkward shape, measuring 12 x 27 with an 18' high ceiling. The original fireplace was underwhelming - a small firebox with a plain mantelpiece that was visually lost on the huge off-white wall. The big-screen rear projection TV dominated the room. So, we started with some very specific goals in mind: to create storage space for CD's, DVD's and kids toys, to re-vamp the fireplace surround, and to find a way to make the huge TV fit into the room. Using some built-in wall units, a bold new design for the fireplace wall, and an up-to-the-minute paint scheme, we were able to make the most of this room within a modest budget.

Built-in bookcases climb the wall in steps, which accents the vertical drama of the room, but preserves an intimate feel in the seating area. Book cases were built into the wall, and are trimmed in oak with simple, mission-inspired crown moulding that works well with the clean lines of the furniture. Halogen spotlights add a finishing touch. Book cases were built to hold large baskets for the kid's toys. Not only do they look good, but they allow for a quick clean-up of the family room.

Oak-trimmed book cases were designed to echo the staggered oak shelves of the new fireplace mantel. Fireplace wall was designed to get the most out of the shape and size of the wall. The mantel, tilework and accent panels all follow the shape of the wall to create a unified visual statement. Vertical accent panels were painted to bring out the warmth of the leather furniture and add a burst of color.

Simple floating shelves make up the new mantel piece, with two shelves staggered to create vertical visual interest and to counter balance the large TV. One of our primary design goals was to make the large-screen TV appear less dominating in the room. Mission accomplished. Tilework, mantel design and accent panels work together to draw the eye up the wall. This makes the TV fit the room, not dominate it.
