This complete kitchen renovation started out with a dated peninsula design, isolated from the adjacent living room by a wall with a single doorway. We removed the wall and designed an island layout that provides much better function and flow. The newly removed wall was partially in-filled by a bank of cabinets, greatly increasing storage over the old layout. This project came with a tight budget, so Ikea cabinets were used to save money without sacrificing style or functionality. This made it possible to custom-fabricate a one-of-a-kind island, featuring a top made from Kirei board, a sustainable material derived from agricultural waste. The island was built from black-stained birch and faced with frosted glass panels. We also installed a much improved lighting plan, featuring recessed lights, halogen rail lights and under-cabinet lighting.
